Is Algar do Carvão open?
Algar do Carvão on Terceira is admitting visitors on a limited October 2026 schedule, but Montanheiros says visits stop from 1 November 2026 so work on the new visitor centre can resume. Do not include an interior visit in a winter itinerary. The operator expects reopening in March 2027, while its own table marks March as uncertain; that is an expected reopening period, not a confirmed opening date.
The Portuguese notice checked on 25 October 2026 lists Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 14:30–17:00, for 1–31 October. The remaining advertised regular openings are 27, 28, 30 and 31 October, subject to changes during construction. The English page is less precise about the closure start; use the explicit 1 November date on the Portuguese notice.
Montanheiros: Algar do Carvão opening notice and visiting conditionsTickets: €10 on arrival, not an online reservation
Montanheiros lists admission at €10 per person under the temporary arrangement. Tickets are bought on arrival; there is no ordinary advance online booking. Cash, debit cards and credit cards except American Express are listed. Combined tickets with Gruta do Natal are not currently sold.
The operator estimates about 30 minutes inside, but that does not include the queue or the approach from the temporary ticket office. Admission is first come, first served and the stated interior limit is 150 people or fewer. Organised groups do not receive queue priority. A tour purchase is not proof of a reserved cave-entry slot.
Montanheiros: Algar do Carvão opening notice and visiting conditionsWhat you visit: a volcanic chimney, not a lava-tube walk
Algar do Carvão is a volcanic chimney with a lake at the bottom and silica formations on the interior surfaces. Visitors use tunnels and a concrete stair route to descend into the cavity. You do not climb down through the open top, and the lake is not a swimming stop.
The operator places it in the centre of Terceira, north of Angra do Heroísmo and about 12 km from the city by road. Use the named attraction as your transport destination. A stay in Angra does not put the entrance within the town walking circuit, and a tour mentioning the volcanic interior should identify whether an actual cave visit is included.
Montanheiros: Algar do Carvão opening notice and visiting conditionsStairs, slippery surfaces and temporary facilities
Montanheiros counts 114 steps to the main platform and 338 steps in total across the route. Humidity exceeds 90%, water drips inside and the concrete surfaces can be slippery. Wear shoes with grip and allow for the climb back out; this is not a step-free attraction.
During the temporary arrangement the operator says there are no toilets, shelter or rest areas on site, and no bar or shop. It does not recommend the visit for people with physical or balance limitations, people with claustrophobia, babies or children carried in arms, or women in advanced pregnancy. These are the operator’s access cautions, not individual medical clearance. Keep to the marked route through the construction area and inside the cave.
Montanheiros: Algar do Carvão opening notice and visiting conditionsHow to fit a late-October visit into an Angra day
On a listed opening day, spend the morning in Angra do Heroísmo and have lunch before travelling to the interior for the afternoon opening. Arrange your return as well as the outward journey if using a taxi. Leave slack for queues instead of putting the cave immediately before an airport transfer or another fixed admission. This is an editorial sequence, not a timed tour.
If visiting both caves, do not assume a single ticket or the same queue applies. Each has its own admission. For travel from 1 November, replace the Algar interior visit altogether rather than keeping it as a weather-dependent option. Rain does not override a construction closure.
Montanheiros: Algar do Carvão opening notice and visiting conditionsGruta do Natal is a separate winter option
Gruta do Natal is a lava tube near Lagoa do Negro, not another entrance to Algar do Carvão. Its operator currently lists Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 14:30–17:00, for October, November and December, with holiday exceptions and possible changes. Its separate ticket is €9, bought on arrival. Algar’s construction closure does not itself close Gruta do Natal.
The original lava floor is uneven and rough, with high humidity and dripping water. Montanheiros also cautions against this visit for people with physical or balance limitations, claustrophobia, babies or carried children, and advanced pregnancy. It is a different cave experience, not an accessible substitute for someone unable to manage Algar’s stairs. Use the Gruta do Natal notice for its own opening date and conditions.
Montanheiros: Gruta do Natal hours, tickets and accessFor a 2027 trip, wait for the actual reopening notice
The operator’s March expectation is not enough to buy non-refundable transport solely for a cave visit. Plan an Angra-and-coast trip that remains worthwhile without Algar do Carvão, then add the cave when Montanheiros confirms admission for your dates. Old summer hours and photographs of the construction site do not establish that the new visitor centre is open.
