For a multi-island trip, start with separate island rentals
Separate rentals keep each vehicle on its collection island and let you choose whether you need a car at all for a short town stay. Carrying one car between islands is worth comparing only after the supplier consents, the intended sailing carries vehicles and a space is available. A foot-passenger reservation does not solve any of those vehicle checks.
For a one-island São Miguel trip, match the rental period to lake and rural outings rather than automatically hiring for all city days. For a Horta town day, a foot-passenger crossing and local walking is a different product from a car-based Faial circuit.
Ilha Verde: read the cross-island clauses together
Ilha Verde’s published terms say the supplier must be informed before taking a passenger vehicle to another island, and separately prohibit carriage aboard a boat without express consent. They also say returning the car on an island where the rental did not start is not permitted.[11]
The practical result is not “all Azores ferries are allowed”. Obtain written consent naming your vehicle category, islands, sailings and continued cover, then plan return to the original island. If you want to fly out of Faial after starting on Pico, compare separate rentals rather than assuming a one-way car drop. These are one supplier’s terms, not an industry-wide rule.

Collection: station, hours and driver documents
Name the actual pickup station: airport, town office and a ferry-port handover are different arrangements. Give the supplier your booked arrival and obtain the procedure for a late service. Keep office opening times separate from the ferry or flight schedule.
Ilha Verde requires authorised drivers to be identified in the contract and sets licence/document conditions. Check the exact card, deposit, category and additional-driver terms on your quote; a payment method accepted for the rental charge is not proof that it also satisfies every security-deposit requirement.[11] Do not rely on a generic “debit cards accepted” claim without the contract details.
A suitable road is not every line on the map
The same supplier’s terms restrict unsuitable, unpaved and other unauthorised road use and require return at the contracted station, date and time.[11] A trailhead photograph does not establish rental permission to drive the final access track. Leave the car at the lawful permitted parking and follow the site’s current access arrangements.
Inspect and photograph the vehicle at collection and return, retain the condition record and distinguish damage excess from a deposit. Compare fuel, mileage and protection exclusions explicitly; this guide does not quote an unverified daily rate or certify cover.
Book the actual vehicle sailing
Search origin, destination and date in Atlânticoline, with the vehicle option, and match the exact port. Madalena and Cais do Pico are different Pico ports; Velas and Calheta are different São Jorge endpoints. Resolve the reverse crossing before treating the first leg as a complete hire plan.
