Which Pico port should you book?
For the Madalena–Horta crossing, select Madalena (MAD) on Pico and Horta (HOR) on Faial. Do not substitute Cais do Pico (CDP), another Pico port listed in Atlânticoline’s search. The current timetable shows Horta–Madalena journeys taking 30 minutes, but your own ticket must confirm the departure, arrival and whether the service is direct.
This is a practical pairing for a two-island holiday or a day trip between the port towns. It is not a door-to-door half-hour journey from a rural Pico stay to Faial’s Caldeira or Capelinhos. Add road travel, check-in and disembarkation to the sea leg.

- 1
Get to Madalena
Choose MAD when booking. From Lajes do Pico or São Roque, arrange the road journey to Madalena separately; being on Pico does not mean you are already at the right departure port. Check the passenger terminal and boarding instruction on the ticket.
- 2
Board for Horta
Search MAD to HOR on the actual date and compare the complete journey shown. Book passenger tickets for everyone. If taking a vehicle, book its space as well and follow the vehicle check-in requirement; passenger availability is not car-deck availability.
- 3
Continue from Horta
For a town day, keep your plan centred on Horta and Porto Pim. For Capelinhos or the Caldeira, arrange transport on Faial before boarding. The ferry does not include that island circuit.

Search the reverse direction
Enter HOR to MAD for your travel date. Do not copy the outward time or assume the final return is the same every day. For a day trip, book the return before committing to activities across the channel.
- 2
Reach the Horta departure point
Allow time to return from Porto Pim, Capelinhos or the Caldeira, collect luggage and meet the ticket’s check-in deadline. An arrival time at Horta airport is not a port arrival time; treat the airport-to-ferry road transfer as another leg.
- 3
Continue beyond Madalena if needed
Madalena is the useful arrival for a local town stay or nearby western Pico plans. For Lajes, São Roque or a rural rental, arrange collection or road transport. A mountain ascent requires its own access arrangements and should not be improvised around a short ferry visit.
Should you take a rental car?
For a Horta town day, travelling as a foot passenger avoids arranging car-deck space. For a Faial road circuit, compare a local rental or booked island tour with taking your existing car across. For a Pico day focused on vineyards or a longer coast circuit, make the same comparison on Pico; the ferry arrival alone does not solve the road journey.
Only take a rental vehicle if its supplier explicitly permits that crossing and the cover applies. Atlânticoline’s vehicle terms do not grant permission under your rental agreement. Its published terms also state that a passenger ticket does not include a vehicle and a vehicle ticket does not include the driver’s passenger ticket. Book the people and the car, not one in place of the other.
Atlânticoline vehicle-transport conditionsCheck-in and the real trip cost
The vehicle conditions currently linked by Atlânticoline require vehicles to present at least 20 minutes before departure. Treat that as the published minimum, not a target arrival from a distant hotel, and follow any earlier instruction on your booking. Have the vehicle registration documentation and driver identification required by the carrier. Foot passengers should follow their own ticket instructions rather than borrowing the vehicle deadline.
Compare the total for all passengers in both directions, vehicle space if applicable, the rental company’s permitted-crossing charges, and road transport at either end. We have not verified one fare valid for all dates and passenger types. Use a non-resident fare unless you qualify for the carrier’s resident category.
Vehicle documents, ticket separation and boarding deadlineDay trip or split stay?
A Pico-based Horta and Porto Pim day is the simplest foot-passenger use of the crossing. Adding Capelinhos and the Caldeira turns it into a road-transport day with a return-ferry constraint. From Horta, a Madalena-focused visit is simpler than attempting Pico’s full coastline or its summit between sailings.
Split your nights between the islands if you want substantial time away from both ports. Our suggested starting point is three nights on each island for a six-night trip, adjusted to your actual arrival airport and interests. That is an editorial allocation, not a minimum stay rule or a transport package.
A seven-day Pico and Faial tripWeather and onward flights
Book the final return with enough room for your essential onward journey. A short sea crossing can still be disrupted. We recommend sleeping on the departure island before an important flight rather than relying on a same-morning ferry; that buffer reduces exposure but cannot guarantee the trip.
For a broader circuit including São Jorge, choose the night allocation and dated connections first instead of adding a third island as an unplanned ferry detour.
