Start with the Pico port, not just the island name
For a Pico to São Jorge ferry, search Atlânticoline for your date and read the complete port sequence. Pico has two ports in the timetable key: Madalena (MAD) and Cais do Pico (CDP). Velas on São Jorge is VEL; Calheta is CAL and is not an interchangeable arrival point. The timetable displays both Horta–Madalena–Velas and Horta–Cais do Pico–Velas journeys, which is why a generic Pico departure can be misleading.
Those displayed routes establish the port choices, not a daily year-round service from both Pico ports. Select your own departure and arrival, then confirm the ticketed journey in the booking system. A whole Horta-origin journey duration is not the duration of its Pico–São Jorge segment.

- 1
Choose the dated departure before arranging the road transfer
Search Pico to São Jorge on the intended date. Compare the named departure port with your accommodation and look at the whole journey rather than taking the first island-name match. Use the port on the ticket when booking a taxi, collecting a rental car or agreeing an accommodation pickup.
- 2
Book people and any vehicle separately
Purchase a passenger ticket for each traveller and reserve vehicle space if taking a car. Passenger availability does not prove car-deck space. A rental company must permit the island crossing and the insurance must cover it; a carrier accepting the booking does not provide that permission.
- 3
Arrange the journey beyond Velas
A central Velas stay is the simplest arrival choice. A booked walk, a fajã stay or accommodation near Calheta needs its own road transfer. Agree the pickup against the actual arrival port and time, not a general promise to meet the ferry.
Does a São Jorge day trip make sense?
A day trip is most workable for Velas itself or a prearranged road outing that fits between two confirmed sailings. The ferry arrives at the town, not at the start of a north-coast walk. São Jorge is long and steep, with a central ridge above the fajãs; do not convert time ashore into walking time without accounting for the road journeys.
For a walking-led visit, stay overnight rather than trying to fit a substantial descent, a return transfer and a ferry deadline into one interval. Three nights is our suggested starting allocation for several outings and a weather alternative, not a minimum stay rule. Trail status and conditions still determine what is possible.

- 1
Search the reverse journey separately
Enter the return date and select São Jorge to Pico. Read the arrival port explicitly: returning to a different Pico port changes where you collect a parked car or meet a transfer. Do not copy the outward sailing time or assume a late return exists.
- 2
Work back from the boarding deadline
Finish the São Jorge outing with time for the road journey to the port and the check-in requirement on the ticket. A taxi pickup at a remote walk endpoint needs an agreed meeting place and time. Do not leave the return-to-port journey to an assumed bus connection.
- 3
Keep an essential flight off the same tight connection
If your onward flight leaves Pico, our preference is to sleep on Pico before departure. A night buffer reduces exposure to a disrupted sailing but cannot guarantee an onward connection. Keep the accommodation and car arrangements changeable where the fare conditions allow.
Foot passenger or car crossing?
For a short stay near Velas, travelling on foot and arranging local excursions avoids moving a vehicle between islands. For several days of independent road travel, compare taking an authorised rental with hiring separately on São Jorge. Include any one-way collection or return requirement on Pico in that comparison.
Atlânticoline’s vehicle conditions state that a passenger ticket does not include the vehicle and a vehicle ticket does not include the driver’s passenger ticket. Book both, and follow the boarding instructions attached to your chosen service. We have not established a single fare, frequency or check-in time valid for every passenger and sailing.
Carrier vehicle-ticket conditionsWhat to compare before paying
Price the outward and return passenger fares, the journeys between your Pico base and the correct ports, and São Jorge transport. If you stay overnight, add the bed and any car hire. If you take a vehicle, add its tickets and the rental supplier’s authorised-crossing charges. A headline ferry fare does not include a day’s travel around São Jorge.
Keep the dated booking as the authority for departure and arrival times. We do not publish an undated timetable or treat a port appearing in the search form as proof that your chosen service runs.
Check both directions for your exact datesChoose a São Jorge base for the whole visit
Velas suits a simple ferry arrival; other bases may suit particular fajã outings better but add road travel. Decide what you intend to do ashore before choosing a day return, and leave room for a weather change rather than making a single walk the condition for the trip’s success.

Use the Pico–São Jorge leg as one part of a planned night allocation. Adding Faial means another dated connection, not a guaranteed circular service. The triangle guide explains when to split stays and when to leave an island for another trip.
