Best hikes on Pico island beyond the summit: vineyards and village loops

Walk Criação Velha’s vineyard coast, take a short mill-route loop from São Roque or spend a longer half-day around Prainha. These lower-level routes do not require a mountain ascent.

Choose a vineyard walk or a loop near your base

Vinhas da Criação Velha is the strongest fit for Pico’s stone-walled vineyard landscape, but it is a linear seven-kilometre route. Ladeira dos Moinhos is a shorter circular choice from São Roque. Prainha do Norte gives you a longer circular route through village, agricultural and coastal scenery. None is the Mount Pico summit trail. Use these walks to plan a holiday that does not depend on a climb. They can also be alternatives when cloud spoils high-level views, provided local wind, rain and coastal conditions still permit walking. Lower altitude is not protection from a severe-weather warning.

Vinhas da Criação Velha: Porto do Calhau to Areia Larga

PR05PIC begins at Porto do Calhau in the Candelária area and ends at Porto da Areia Larga, near Madalena. The official route follows the coast via Porto do Pocinho, Laja das Rosas and the vineyard landscape around Moinho do Frade. Look for the basalt vineyard enclosures, wheel ruts and rola-pipas, the slopes used to move wine barrels towards boats. These are working vineyards; do not pick fruit or leave the marked route to cross the enclosures. The authority lists seven kilometres, easy difficulty and a two-hour average. That covers the linear route, not transport from your accommodation or a walk back to the start. Arrange a drop-off at Porto do Calhau and collection at Areia Larga, or place your car at the finish and arrange transport to the start. Madalena centre and Areia Larga are different meeting points: specify the harbour rather than just the town name. The route page identifies Porto do Calhau as the start; do not assume the windmill is the start of the complete seven-kilometre walk. If you only visit the windmill and nearby vineyard lanes, treat that as a shorter visit, not completion of PR05PIC.

Ladeira dos Moinhos: the short São Roque loop

PRC08PIC starts near the old bridge close to São Roque’s mother church. The route climbs first on asphalt and then a steep cobbled lane beside a stream, passing old mills. It later uses a road with views towards São Roque before descending along a watercourse and a narrow path beside a wall. The 3.3 km circular route has an official average of 1h15 and an easy rating. It suits a shorter walking session rather than a full hiking day. Easy still includes the initial steep section and potentially slippery paving; it is not a promise of step-free access or a pushchair route.

Prainha do Norte: allow for the whole loop

PRC09PIC starts and ends at Dr. José Machado Serpa square beside the church of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda in Prainha. It crosses agricultural land and old vineyard areas, reaches the Ponta da Rocha viewpoint and includes coastal stops around Canto da Areia and Poça Branca. The current official information gives 8.8 km and three hours, with an easy rating. Choose it when you want a longer outing without arranging a finish taxi. The beach and natural-pool references identify places on the route, not guaranteed swimming conditions; a walking day does not require entering the sea. Add time for stops rather than treating the three-hour average as a complete door-to-door excursion.

Weather, alerts and fitting a walk around other plans

The official closed-trail list checked on 25 October 2026 contains no Pico routes. Recheck the named route and current weather before setting out; this dated observation does not certify future access. Download the route map before leaving, take water and waterproof clothing, and keep coastal sections out of storm conditions. For a Madalena-based day, the vineyard route is the most direct geographical match. From São Roque, Ladeira dos Moinhos avoids moving to the west solely for a short walk. Prainha makes sense as its own longer north-coast outing. These are editorial day choices, not organised tours or published bus connections. Leave space between the hike and a booked ferry or whale-watching check-in.
