Book the arrival island, not just “the Azores”
For São Miguel, search Ponta Delgada (PDL). For Terceira, search Terceira/Lajes (TER). For a central-triangle holiday, compare Horta on Faial (HOR) and Pico (PIX), including any mainland or inter-island connection. A cheaper Ponta Delgada arrival can be the wrong purchase if your holiday is actually on Pico and you still need another flight.
From mainland Portugal, Lisbon and Porto are useful starting points to compare. From farther away, compare a dated international itinerary with a mainland-Portugal connection. Inspect every segment: a destination shown in an airline’s catalogue is not proof of a nonstop from your home airport or a daily service.

Mainland Portugal: compare the complete fare to your island
The airline’s current destination search shows Lisbon–Ponta Delgada, Porto–Ponta Delgada, Lisbon–Terceira, Lisbon–Horta and Lisbon–Pico itinerary examples. Use those as search starting points, not promises that every route runs every day or that the displayed fare remains available. The operator itself says advertised fares may no longer be available when you book.
If you need a mainland connection, compare arrival and departure airports, connection duration and the ticket conditions as well as the headline fare. A self-connection requiring baggage collection and another check-in is different from an itinerary sold with an onward connection. Have the airline or seller confirm the actual protection and baggage arrangement before paying; sharing a travel date or brand name does not establish it.

Azores Airlines’ destination search includes Boston–Ponta Delgada and Toronto–Ponta Delgada offers, alongside other North American and European destination pages. That establishes useful searches, not a year-round nonstop from every listed city. On your dates, read whether the offered itinerary stops or connects and which Azorean island receives it.
For a one-island holiday, compare the total journey to that island rather than forcing an extra stop in Ponta Delgada. For a planned multi-island stay, it can be useful to arrive on one island and depart from another, but price that itinerary alongside the actual inter-island leg and extra ground transfers.

SATA Air Açores operates inter-island services; Azores Airlines’ booking search also displays these itineraries. Search the final island, not merely the first gateway, and inspect intermediate stops. For Flores, Corvo, Graciosa, São Jorge or Santa Maria, the next available flight can be more important to the plan than the price of reaching Ponta Delgada.
For Pico, Faial and São Jorge, compare a ferry only after you know the dated sailing and its actual port. Do not plan a São Miguel–Pico or São Miguel–Santa Maria ferry from geographical proximity or an old route map. Flights are the starting comparison for those eastern-to-other-island moves; the ferry timetable must independently establish any sailing you hope to use.

For a central Ponta Delgada stay, arrange the journey to the actual address and excursion meeting points. For Terceira, distinguish an Angra stay from Praia da Vitória or a rural house. For a Horta arrival followed by Pico, allow for the road transfer to Horta ferry terminal, passenger check-in, the crossing and the final Pico transfer.
If you hire a car, compare collection hours with the booked arrival and return hours with your departure. Separate island rentals may be simpler than carrying a rental vehicle on a ferry; permission from the rental company and ferry vehicle space are different requirements.
Connections and disruption: leave a recovery option
Our planning recommendation is to return to the island of an inflexible flight home with a separate recovery day where practicable. That is an editorial buffer, not a guarantee or an airline minimum connection time. Allow more flexibility when a missed departure would have high consequences.
For travel from 21 October to 3 November 2026, SATA has published a specific handling-strike disruption notice affecting Azores airports. Its stated periods are 07:30–10:30 on 21–27 October and 16:00–19:00 on 28 October–3 November. The notice offers qualifying advance booking changes to flights outside strike periods between 18 October and 10 November, subject to availability. Read the current notice for the booking concerned; it does not mean every flight is cancelled or that every itinerary is protected.

Compare the full travel-day sequence in both directions: home airport, any mainland stop, Azorean arrival airport, onward island and final accommodation. Check the fare’s baggage and change terms, whether you need to collect bags during a connection, and who is responsible if an earlier segment changes. Keep dates attached to each segment, especially after an overnight international departure.
