For a first visit, start with São Miguel or Terceira
For a first Azores holiday built around crater lakes and thermal baths, our default is São Miguel, with Ponta Delgada as the starting base to compare. Choose Terceira and central Angra do Heroísmo if historic town walks and island outings matter more than São Miguel’s lakes. For a Pico-and-Faial holiday, compare Madalena and Horta against the days you actually want on each island.
There is no hotel location from which you can casually visit all nine islands. Choose the island before the room. A view of another island does not make it a convenient day trip, and a ferry or flight move includes luggage, terminal transfers and another check-in. This guide owns that island-and-base decision; the linked island guides give the finer accommodation-area comparisons.
São Miguel: Ponta Delgada, Furnas or the north coast?
Ponta Delgada is our first comparison for a stay without a car: you can combine city time with separately booked excursions. Choose an actual central address and compare pickup points, not just the municipality name. Staying in the city does not put Sete Cidades or Furnas within walking distance.
Choose Furnas when valley evenings and time around the gardens are part of the holiday, rather than planning repeated journeys from a city hotel. Ribeira Grande suits a north-coast emphasis; distinguish the town from a beach-area property. For five to seven nights, one base is our usual starting recommendation. Add a Furnas or eastern split only when you want several local days and evenings, not just a different bedroom.
Visit Azores: Sao MiguelTerceira: Angra for town days, Praia for beach time
Central Angra do Heroísmo suits a stay with sightseeing on foot and evenings in town. Use Praça Velha and the waterfront as map references. Monte Brasil adds an uphill outing; the volcanic interior and north coast still need transport.
Compare Praia da Vitória for a sandy beach beside town and an eastern-island location. An airport-area address is not automatically a walkable beach base. Biscoitos or another rural house suits a car-based holiday when time at the property and nearby coast is the point. For a short first stay, one Angra or Praia base is generally more useful than moving rooms mid-visit.
Visit Azores: TerceiraPico or Faial: Madalena and Horta answer different holidays
Stay in Madalena when Pico is the main purpose and the Horta crossing is part of the plan. Choose Lajes do Pico when several south-coast activities depart there. A São Roque-area stay is a different option for northern outings and a ticket naming Cais do Pico; that port is not Madalena.
Stay in Horta when Faial town evenings, Capelinhos and the Caldeira shape most days. Porto Pim gives a beach-side emphasis within a Horta stay; a western rural base around Capelo or Varadouro needs road transport. If you want several full days on both islands, split nights between them instead of repeatedly commuting by ferry. A six-night three-and-three split is an editorial starting point, not a package or a minimum stay.
Atlânticoline: dated timetable, availability and port keySão Jorge: choose Velas before an isolated fajã stay
Velas is our first comparison for a town-based walking holiday, especially with an arrival at VEL ferry port. Calheta can suit southern and eastern outings. Neither puts the island’s main walks on your doorstep: a linear hike needs a start drop-off and a finish pickup.
Choose a fajã stay only after understanding the final approach, luggage handling and meals. A coastal map pin below the cliffs does not prove road access. For travellers who want town meals and booked hiking transfers, a remote house can create more logistics than it removes.
Visit Azores: Sao JorgeFlores and Corvo: protect the western-island stay
On Flores, Santa Cruz suits an airport-side town base; Fajã Grande suits time on the western waterfall coast. Lajes is another southern option. Match an accommodation’s actual address to its name: a country-house cluster is not necessarily in the village centre.
Choose Flores because you want time there, whether or not a Corvo day trip works. For Corvo, distinguish a day excursion from an overnight in Vila do Corvo, and arrange the onward road journey to Caldeirão separately. Do not make a western-island boat return the only bridge to an inflexible flight home.
Visit Azores: FloresSanta Maria and Graciosa: town, beach or rural house?
On Santa Maria, compare Vila do Porto for town-based evenings with Praia Formosa or São Lourenço when beach or bay time is the reason to stay. A rural apartment can suit self-catering, but its access and food-shopping arrangements matter more than the island-wide label.
On Graciosa, central Santa Cruz is the town-first choice. Praia, also called São Mateus, is the beach-and-port-side comparison; Carapacho suits a southeastern-coast emphasis. A named hotel, windmill conversion and separate country house have different layouts and locations. Choose the setting first, then compare the exact room or unit.
Book the room and local transport as one decision
For each candidate, compare the same occupancy, dates and cancellation terms. Add the arrival transfer, car or excursion costs, meals and any charged parking. A cheaper isolated house can cost more overall if it creates several paid journeys. A town hotel can also be awkward if its actual address is uphill or outside the centre.
Get property-specific answers on steps, cot or extra-bed layout, late check-in and luggage storage. A destination label or sea-view photograph proves none of those. No room prices, vacancies or personal hotel inspections are claimed here. Recommendations about base choice and night allocations are editorial guidance.
