Azores itinerary: 10 days on Pico, São Jorge and Faial

Ten days works for the central triangle if the transport fits

For a walking-and-volcanic-landscape trip, spend four nights on Pico, three on São Jorge and two on Faial. Start on Pico and leave from Faial, using two confirmed inter-island journeys. This gives São Jorge a real stay instead of a ferry-day checklist. It is an editorial 10-day, nine-night route, not a package or a timetable.

Choose it only when your flights and dated sailings support that sequence. If São Miguel is the main reason for the holiday, use the simpler alternative below instead of adding it as a fourth island. Travellers who want unhurried time on Faial should also reduce the island count: this pattern has only one full Faial day.

Book these transport legs before the rooms

Resolve arrival on Pico, the day 5 Pico–São Jorge journey, the day 8 São Jorge–Faial journey, and your Faial departure. Atlânticoline searches by origin, destination and date; the whole route and booked ports matter. An island appearing in the search menu does not guarantee a service on your day.

Keep a different night pattern if the journey is absent or would leave too little time ashore. Reversing the route is possible only after checking the reverse connections, not by reading this itinerary backwards. The plan does not rely on a ferry on the morning of the homebound flight.

Day 1: Arrive on Pico

Arrive on Pico and transfer to Madalena. Keep the remaining time for the town and the practical jobs of collecting transport and buying supplies. This route assumes a flight plan delivering you to Pico and a departure from Faial; an extra positioning stay is not hidden inside the nine nights.

Overnight: Madalena, Pico.

Day 2: Western vineyards and the lava coast

Use the first full day for the Criação Velha vineyard landscape and western coast. With a car, group nearby coastal stops rather than driving around the whole island. Without one, arrange a western outing from Madalena. A winery tasting is an optional separate booking, not included access.

Overnight: Madalena, Pico.

Day 3: Lajes do Pico and the south coast

Give Lajes and the south coast their own day. If a whale-watching booking is the main activity, use its actual harbour and meeting time to organise the land stops. A Madalena pickup is not implied by a Lajes departure. Return to the same base.

Day 4: Keep a Pico weather day

Use this for the outing displaced by weather. If the first two days worked, choose the São Roque area and north coast or a shorter western day. A Pico summit ascent is not built into this plan: it needs a separately qualified booking, access conditions and a suitable weather window.

Day 5: Move from Pico to São Jorge

Book an actual Pico–São Jorge sailing for this date. Read whether the departure is Madalena (MAD) or Cais do Pico (CDP), then arrange the transfer and car return accordingly. Transfer from the booked arrival port to a Velas stay and keep the rest of the day local.

Overnight: Velas, São Jorge.

Day 6: Reserve the best suitable day for a fajã outing

Choose a specific official route that fits your party and current alerts, and prearrange the start and finish transport. A road-based visit to selected accessible places is the alternative if a descent is unsuitable. Do not treat the island name as a promise that every fajã can be reached by car.

Overnight: Velas, São Jorge.

Day 7: A second São Jorge day, with room to swap

If the main outing happened yesterday, group Velas and western São Jorge or take an agreed south/east excursion around Calheta. If weather moved the walking day, use today for it instead. Do not commit both days to prepaid, unchangeable outings.

Overnight: Velas, São Jorge.

Day 8: Move to Faial and stay in Horta

Book the complete São Jorge–Faial journey before using this pattern, reading any intermediate port rather than assuming a direct sailing. Arrange departure-port transport and arrival in Horta. Use remaining time for town or Porto Pim; an island circuit is not assumed on a transfer day.

Overnight: Horta, Faial.

Day 9: Choose Capelinhos or Caldeira for the full Faial day

Capelinhos is the straightforward main road excursion for the volcanic coast. If the Caldeira viewpoint is your priority and conditions suit it, choose that instead; no crater descent is included. This day is also the first margin available if the previous transfer was delayed.

Overnight: Horta, Faial.

Day 10: Depart from Faial

Transfer from Horta to your booked Faial flight. There is no planned ferry before the flight. If your homeward ticket needs a separate positioning flight or a night on São Miguel, redesign the nights before booking rather than attaching it to this day unseen.

If nine nights and three islands feels too busy

Use six nights on São Miguel followed by three on one other island, choosing a dated air connection and a departure that fits. São Miguel then supplies Sete Cidades, Furnas and the central lakes without a hotel move; the second island should answer a specific interest, such as Horta and Capelinhos on Faial. Do not insert a one-night stop simply because a flight passes through somewhere.

For an entirely central-islands holiday with fewer moves, use five Pico nights and four Faial nights. That removes the São Jorge leg and makes room for repeated weather attempts and two full Faial excursions. The opportunity cost is explicit: you are not getting a São Jorge walking stay.

Choose beds and local transport as one booking decision

Madalena, Velas and Horta are the starting bases for this route. Look at exact addresses rather than municipality labels, especially without a car. Book separate island transport for the land days; a foot-passenger ferry ticket gets you between ports, not around the islands.

For a linear São Jorge walk, a rental car at the start still needs collecting. Include the two walking transfers or an agreed retrieval in the cost. Carry a rental between islands only with explicit supplier permission, the required return arrangement and booked vehicle space.

What to price and what this plan excludes

Price nine accommodation nights as four plus three plus two, arrival and departure flights, both inter-island journeys, airport and port transfers, and local road travel on each island. Add meals and your selected guided activities or admissions. There is no summit booking, guaranteed whale sighting, included trail transfer or single verified daily budget in this plan.

If you mean ten nights rather than ten calendar days, add the extra night to Faial for a second full day there. If flights require an additional positioning stay, include it in the night count before paying. Keep some funds and flexible bookings for a disrupted move.

A current flight disruption to account for

Read the dated airline notice for the affected hours and the rebooking conditions. This is a specific 2026 alert, not a statement that flights are cancelled throughout every day or that future seasons face the same restriction.

Check the actual walking route before departure

The daily plan reserves time for a suitable outing; it does not certify any trail as open or safe. Read the official alerts and individual route details, and use a town or appropriate road-based alternative when conditions do not suit the walk.
