Lagoa do Fogo: viewpoints, seasonal shuttle rules and the lake walk

Plan Lagoa do Fogo access without relying on an old shuttle calendar: choose the road viewpoints or the official southern walking route.

Choose a viewpoint visit or a proper lake walk

Lagoa do Fogo has two different visit plans: see the crater lake from the mountain-road viewpoints, or walk to its southern shore from Parque Escutista dos Lagos. Choose the viewpoints for a shorter stop or a day that also includes Caldeira Velha. Choose the southern trail when walking is the main activity and you can allow about four hours plus transport. Do not assume a path dropping from the road viewpoint is the official lake-access route. The current Azores Trails description identifies the southern PR02SMI as the only homologated walking route giving access to the lake.

Shuttle dates: use the current authority notice

The tourism authority’s notice checked on 24 October 2026 gives 1 August–30 September 2026, 09:00–20:00, for the summer shuttle. That summer operating period has ended. It also announces service during the Easter 2027 school holidays, 09:00–18:00, without giving exact calendar dates on the page. Older pages still show a June–September season, a €5 ticket and an earlier closing time. Do not use those as the current timetable or fare. The latest authority notice lists €8 for non-residents, €4 for non-resident children aged 7–12 and seniors over 65, and free travel for children up to 6 and Azores residents. Tickets are sold on the buses. Treat these as the published scheme, not a guarantee of unchanged 2027 fares.

Can you drive a rental car to the viewpoints?

During shuttle operation, access on the road between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água is restricted. The published exceptions include tourism activity companies, travel agencies, taxis and residents. A normal visitor driving a rental car should plan to park at one end and use the shuttle, not drive to the viewpoint car park. The Red Line starts at Caldeira Velha and serves Bela Vista, Pico da Barrosa and the Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint before returning. The Green Line starts at Casa da Água, serves Pico da Barrosa and the lake viewpoint, then returns. The same ticket permits using both itineraries and getting off to rejoin later. Each itinerary is described as about 60 minutes before allowing for your own stops. Outside the announced operating periods, do not extrapolate that seasonal restriction into a year-round shuttle requirement, or interpret its end as a guarantee that a weather-affected road is open. Follow current road signs. A prearranged taxi is an alternative for travellers without a car; the mountain shuttle itself does not collect in Ponta Delgada.

Viewpoints: lake first, then the wider panorama

Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo is the direct lake-view stop. Pico da Barrosa adds views towards both the north and south coasts. Bela Vista looks across the north coast rather than replacing the lake viewpoint. If visibility is good, prioritise the lake and Barrosa; if low cloud hides the crater, a longer stay at the same stop may add little. Keep this part of your island plan flexible. Fog and rain can remove the view even when the road is accessible. Pairing the mountain with a lower-elevation Ribeira Grande stop gives you something to do if the crater is covered, without committing the whole day to waiting.

The southern lake walk: PR02SMI, not a viewpoint shortcut

The current Portuguese Azores Trails page starts the route beside Parque Escutista dos Lagos, also the start/end for PR39SMI Quatro Fábricas da Luz. Its detailed description is an out-and-back to the southern lake margin, returning on the same path. The information panel lists 10.2 km, medium difficulty and about four hours, although its category still says circular. Follow the current description and route file rather than inventing a circular return. This is not a walk beginning at the mountain-road shuttle stop. Arrange transport to the southern trailhead and a return pickup there. Wet and muddy sections, especially beside the levada, call for suitable footwear. Carry water, food and weather protection; leave room for a slower return rather than treating four hours as a deadline. The trail authority asks walkers to remain on the marked route, remove all litter and respect birdlife, particularly during gull nesting in April and May. Its alerts page did not list PR02SMI as closed when checked, but closures can change. Use the current alerts and on-site instructions on the day; do not substitute the nearby closed Pico da Praia route.

A workable Fogo and thermal-pool day

For a viewpoint-and-pool day, use the clearest part of the day for the lake viewpoint and Pico da Barrosa, then attend a separately reserved Caldeira Velha visit. Alternatively, put a morning pool slot first and keep the viewpoints flexible afterwards. Allow for the shuttle journey and waiting time when it is running. For a hiking day, make the southern trail the main plan and have lunch or a coast stop afterwards. Adding a timed bath and several distant viewpoints turns a four-hour walk into a rushed day. The lake walk and Caldeira Velha use different access points, even though both appear under Lagoa do Fogo in tour descriptions.
