Caldeira Velha: thermal-pool tickets, visit-only entry and booking

Choose the €10 bathing ticket or €3 nature visit, book the correct 90-minute slot and plan Caldeira Velha with Lagoa do Fogo.

Which Caldeira Velha ticket do you need?

Caldeira Velha is a thermal-pool and nature visit on the northern side of the Fogo volcano, above Ribeira Grande on São Miguel. Buy the Full Ticket if you want to use the pools. The cheaper Visit Ticket covers the natural monument and interpretation centre only; it is not a discounted bathing ticket. Choose it for a forest-and-pools stop on a north-coast or Fogo outing. For a botanical garden with bathing, Terra Nostra is a different experience; for a late-evening bath, Poça da Dona Beija is the more useful comparison.

Prices and the 90-minute time slot

The official tariff checked on 24 October 2026 lists Full Tickets at €10 for ages 15–64 and €5 for ages 7–14. The adult Visit Ticket is €3 and the junior Visit Ticket €1. Children aged 0–6 enter free. Locker hire is listed separately at €2. The visit-only family ticket is €5 for two adults and children up to 14; that family price does not include pool access. Tickets are valid for 1 hour 30 minutes in the purchased slot. Plan changing and showers within the visit rather than treating this as 90 minutes continuously in hot water. The stated simultaneous capacity is 100 visitors in the thermal pools and 250 across the site. A Visit Ticket does not secure a bathing place when Full Tickets are unavailable.

Book by the day before, not on the way there

The parks ticket-office page says online sales for the following day end at 23:59 and same-day tickets cannot be purchased through that method. Choose the number of visitors, Full or Visit Ticket, date and available time on the official booking site. Do not rely on arriving at the gate and upgrading a nature ticket. The booking page says purchases are final, with no cancellation or refund except closure by management. Its terms also prevent changing the visit date or visitor details after purchase. Save your emailed ticket for check-in and settle your transport before paying.

Opening hours change with the season

Published hours are 09:00–17:00 from November through March; 09:00–18:30 in April and October; and 09:00–20:30 from May through September. The centre closes on 1 January and 25 December. The ticket office closes 30 minutes before the site. Opening hours are not a promise that every bathing slot remains available. Select an offered slot rather than arriving shortly before closing. Management can close the site because of weather.

Bring a towel and follow the bathing warnings

Bring swimwear, a towel, dry clothes and a bag for wet things. The booking page requires showers before and after the pools, says not to drink the thermal water and warns against opening your eyes while submerged. The same official guidance advises avoiding bathing during pregnancy, debility, recent surgery or trauma, an unhealed wound or chronic illness. These are venue warnings, not a health benefit or personal medical assessment. A free child ticket does not establish suitability for hot-water bathing. Visitors with a legally recognised disability or impairment are asked to contact the centre directly; do not infer step-free pool entry from admission availability.

Getting there and combining it with the viewpoints

The centre is on Estrada Regional da Lagoa do Fogo, 9600-590 Ribeira Grande. It is not in Furnas. A taxi or organised trip needs a pickup that fits your timed entry; the seasonal Fogo shuttle is a mountain-road service, not a transfer from your hotel. During the published shuttle operating periods, ordinary visitor cars cannot use the restricted road between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água. The tourism authority lists parking at both ends and a Red Line starting at Caldeira Velha. Its latest published summer period was 1 August–30 September 2026, with a return announced for the Easter 2027 school holidays. Do not assume it runs every day of the year. If combining the pools with Fogo, leave transfer and waiting time around your reservation. Put the viewpoints in the clearer weather window rather than squeezing a lake walk into the gap before a non-refundable bath.
