Azores in October: weather, islands and a practical trip plan

October brings mild coastal weather but more rain than summer. Compare a São Miguel stay with a Pico-and-Faial trip and leave room for sea disruption.

Is October a good time to visit the Azores?

October suits a flexible Azores trip with local sightseeing, walking opportunities and time to wait for better conditions. It is a weaker choice for guaranteed beach weather or a short itinerary that needs every boat outing to run. For a first week, our recommendation is São Miguel without an obligatory island change. Pico and Faial can suit travellers specifically interested in vineyard coast, Horta and the central islands, but treat the crossing as a real transport dependency. Choose that pair because you want those places, not because an October week must include more than one island.

October weather: warm afternoons do not mean a dry holiday

At coastal Ponta Delgada, IPMA’s 1991–2020 normal gives October an average daily maximum of 22.6°C and minimum of 17.1°C. Average rainfall is 118.0 mm, with 13.7 days receiving at least 1 mm. September records 25.0°C, 19.1°C and 78.2 mm respectively. October is therefore still mild at this station but wetter and cooler than September. The rain-day count does not mean thirteen or fourteen complete washout days. Nor do these São Miguel figures describe every island or the conditions at elevation.

São Miguel, one baseA first visit with lake districts, Furnas and Ponta Delgada town time. You need local transport for dispersed sights; keep high viewpoints movable.
Pico and FaialVineyard-coast sightseeing and Horta, with a genuine interest in both islands.Verify the dated crossing in both directions and finish on the island of your onward flight.
Several widely separated islandsA longer trip where extra transfer days are acceptable.A short October week can lose too much flexibility to transport dependencies.

How to use a six-night São Miguel stay

Our suggested shape is one base for six nights, usually Ponta Delgada for travellers who want town services between excursions. Use the arrival day locally. Keep separate full days available for the Sete Cidades area, Furnas, the Lagoa do Fogo area and the east of the island, then hold one full day for the outing most affected by weather. Depart on day seven. This is a pacing recommendation, not a promise that every attraction is open. Reorder the sightseeing days once you have a short-range forecast. A clouded-out lake rim is a reason to change the day, not to add another island at short notice.

If you prefer Pico and Faial

Start by choosing the island of your arriving and departing flights. Search Horta (HOR) and Madalena (MAD) for your intended crossing and the return or onward direction. Confirm the dated result before splitting accommodation; if taking a car, passenger availability alone is insufficient. With six nights, our recommendation is to choose two bases at most and finish with recovery time on the departure island. Do not place a ferry crossing immediately before a separately booked onward flight. This guide does not infer an October frequency or ticket availability from the route name.

Walking and sea activities in October

Keep walks flexible and check official trail alerts before choosing a route. For Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, distinguish a roadside viewpoint visit from a longer exposed walk; neither is a substitute for an individual route assessment. A town’s temperature cannot qualify a Pico ascent.

Should whale watching or swimming decide the trip?

Do not choose October to target the spring migration of blue, fin and sei whales: the IWC handbook places that window in April to June. It identifies sperm whales as resident year-round, but presence does not guarantee a sighting or a departure. Put a wanted boat outing early enough to leave another possible day. For swimming, use the conditions at the specific bathing place rather than the air-temperature average. A calm-looking bay or a warm afternoon is not evidence of safe entry. If daily sea access is essential to your holiday, October adds uncertainty you should accept before booking.

Pack for wet excursions, not just 22°C afternoons

A waterproof jacket, light warm layer and suitable walking footwear are more useful than a summer-only bag. Keep dry clothes for after an excursion. Before a high or exposed outing, read the local forecast and the IPMA warning group for the island; do not carry a coastal average into a mountain plan. There is no live fare comparison behind this guide. October is not automatically cheaper for your combination of flights, rooms and transport: compare the same trip basket on your actual dates.

October or November?

November is cooler at Ponta Delgada and suits an even less transfer-dependent stay. Its average rainfall is actually lower than October at this station.
