Azores in November: weather and a flexible São Miguel stay
Expect mild coastal temperatures, rain and fewer reasons to rush between islands. Plan a November stay around São Miguel, movable excursions and town-day alternatives.
Is November worth visiting?
November can work for a slower Azores holiday if you are happy with mild rather than hot weather and can enjoy a stay without a successful boat trip. For a first visit, our recommendation is one island, usually São Miguel, with movable excursions from a settled base. Choose a different season if your holiday depends on repeated sea outings, guaranteed lake views or a tightly linked island-hopping route. The reason to visit in November is that the land-based trip still appeals to you, not an assumption that every summer activity continues unchanged.
November weather: what the averages say
IPMA’s 1991–2020 normal for Ponta Delgada gives November an average daily maximum of 19.9°C and minimum of 14.9°C. Average monthly rainfall is 95.3 mm, with 11.8 days receiving at least 1 mm. These are coastal São Miguel figures from a station at 35 metres, not an archipelago-wide forecast. For comparison, October has a 22.6°C average maximum and 118.0 mm of rainfall; December has 18.3°C and 152.8 mm. November is cooler than October but is not the wettest of those three months at this station. Rain may occupy part of a day rather than all of it.
IPMA: November temperature and rainfall tablesWhere to stay: town services or a Furnas-focused break?
Our default base is Ponta Delgada if you want restaurants and town time between island excursions. Keep a six-night first visit in one accommodation unless there is a specific reason to move. This preserves days you can rearrange rather than tying a viewpoint outing to a change of hotel. Furnas is the alternative for a stay focused on the valley and nearby sights. It is a more specialised choice than Ponta Delgada for a first island-wide visit. Do not book it solely on the assumption that a particular thermal pool will be open on your dates; verify the attraction’s own booking and access information before making it the purpose of the stay.

| Compare | Plan | How to adapt it |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1: arrival | Settle into the base and keep the outing local. | Do not attach an essential timed excursion to the flight arrival. |
| Day 2: western São Miguel | Use a suitable clear-weather opportunity for the Sete Cidades district. | Swap with town time if low cloud obscures the lake views. |
| Day 3: Furnas | Give the valley a full outing rather than adding several distant stops. | Verify individual attraction access; bathing is optional. |
| Day 4: central island | Consider the Lagoa do Fogo district if conditions suit it. | A viewpoint plan does not require committing to a longer trail. |
| Day 5: eastern outing | Use a suitable weather window for the Nordeste area. | Choose a shorter excursion if conditions reduce useful time outside. |
| Day 6: recovery day | Retry the main missed outing or spend time in Ponta Delgada. | Keep it uncommitted until you know what earlier days delivered. |
| Day 7: departure | Leave time for the flight and return of any hired vehicle. | Do not use departure morning for an essential sea trip. |
Rainy-day alternatives need realistic limits
Use Ponta Delgada for a shorter town day between excursions rather than driving the full island in search of blue sky. Furnas can give a day a different focus from a crater-rim view, but it is not an all-weather indoor destination. If a weather warning affects the area, follow current guidance rather than treating the alternative as automatically safe. Keep high viewpoints, longer walks and any sea outing on different movable days. This outline is an editorial suggestion, not a seven-day forecast or a bookable package.
Can you still walk in November?
A November trip can include walking, but the month alone cannot qualify a trail. Read the route description for distance, ascent, surface and exposure, then check the official closure list and current local forecast. Start with a route you can shorten or replace without stranding yourself away from your base. A coastal outing is not automatically safe in rough seas, and a lower route may still be affected by rain or damage. Do not substitute a closed trail with an unmarked shortcut.
Official Azores Trails alertsIsland hopping: keep it optional, not compulsory
If São Miguel is the main purpose of the trip, do not add a second island merely to fill a week. For a central-island visit instead, Pico and Faial may be a coherent choice, but first establish flights and the actual dated crossing in each required direction. The timetable search separates passenger seats and vehicle space. Our recommendation is to finish on the island of the important onward flight with recovery time before departure. No buffer guarantees recovery from a long disruption. This guide does not assert November sailing frequency or infer feasibility from a summer timetable.

Sperm whales are resident year-round according to the IWC handbook, but November is outside its April-to-June migration window for fin, blue and sei whales. Treat whale watching as a possible addition to the trip, not the outcome that makes the entire holiday worthwhile.

Carry waterproof outerwear and a warm layer for wet or exposed outings, even when the coastal temperature looks comfortable. Match footwear and equipment to the route. Read the appropriate eastern, central or western Azores warning group and the warning’s time period before setting out. If price is the reason you are considering November, compare your actual flights, rooms and transport. This guide has no live price inventory and does not promise an off-season saving.
