Two weeks is enough for three stays, not all nine islands
For a first two-week Azores trip, use six nights on São Miguel, four on Pico and three on Faial. São Miguel supplies the main lake and Furnas days, Pico adds vineyards and the lava coast, and Faial adds Horta and Capelinhos. The sequence requires a confirmed flight itinerary from São Miguel to Pico and a dated Madalena–Horta crossing.
This is a 14-day, 13-night editorial itinerary, arriving on São Miguel and departing from Faial. It does not promise a direct flight home from Horta or that the inter-island flight is nonstop. If your tickets require returning to Ponta Delgada, use the revised night pattern below before booking accommodation.
Use one base on each island
Ponta Delgada, Madalena and Horta are the practical starting bases for this version. Keep one stay on each island and group outings geographically. An eastern São Miguel split stay can suit a slower trip, but this plan uses day trips so that luggage moves do not consume the extra time.
A car makes independent road days easier. Without one, book excursions or transfers with pickups that actually serve your accommodation, especially on Pico and Faial. Do not convert the day-by-day road sequence into an assumed public-bus itinerary.
Day 1: Arrive in Ponta Delgada
Transfer to a Ponta Delgada base and keep the rest of the day local. Collect a rental car only when it fits your arrival time; otherwise start with a booked transfer. The route is São Miguel, then Pico, then Faial, with six, four and three nights respectively.
Overnight: Ponta Delgada, São Miguel.
Official island geographyDay 2: Sete Cidades and western São Miguel
Use a clear-weather window for Vista do Rei, the lakes and Sete Cidades village. Add Mosteiros if time allows, not as an obligation. If the rim is in cloud, exchange this day with a lower-level town or coast day later in the São Miguel stay.
Overnight: Ponta Delgada, São Miguel.
Official island geographyDay 3: Ribeira Grande and the central island
Make Ribeira Grande and the north coast the core outing. Add Lagoa do Fogo viewpoints only under the current access arrangements and suitable visibility. This is not a lake-descent hiking plan, and the road journey should not be treated as proof of trail access.
Overnight: Ponta Delgada, São Miguel.
Official island geographyDay 4: Furnas village and lake
Give Furnas its own full day. Combine the village and lake area, then choose a garden or thermal venue only with a confirmed admission arrangement. The basic day remains usable without a bathing booking; avoid combining it with the far west.
Overnight: Ponta Delgada, São Miguel.
Official island geographyDay 5: Choose Nordeste or a shorter southern outing
Choose Nordeste and its garden viewpoints for an eastern road day. For less driving, use Vila Franca do Campo and the south coast instead. A town visit does not include permission or a boat to the protected islet. Return to Ponta Delgada rather than changing hotels for one excursion.
Overnight: Ponta Delgada, São Miguel.
Official island geographyDay 6: Keep the last São Miguel day movable
Retry the lake views missed to cloud or use a Ponta Delgada town day. If whale watching matters, make the first attempt earlier in the stay so this can be a possible second opportunity, subject to an actual booking and conditions. Do not add a fourth island as a day trip.
Overnight: Ponta Delgada, São Miguel.
Official island geographyDay 7: Fly to Pico and settle in Madalena
Use a confirmed flight itinerary that delivers you to Pico on this date, including any connection explicitly shown. This is a transfer day, not a promised direct flight or a full sightseeing day. Arrange airport transport and keep the remainder local.
Overnight: Madalena, Pico.
Official island geographyDay 8: Criação Velha and western Pico
Spend the day in western vineyard country and along the lava coast. Arrange a tasting or visitor facility separately if wanted. Madalena makes a practical single base, but the vineyard landscape is not all within a casual walk from every hotel.
Overnight: Madalena, Pico.
Official island geographyDay 9: Lajes and the south coast
Choose Lajes for a south-coast outing. A booked marine activity can shape the day, but match its real departure harbour and reporting time before adding land stops. If the sea trip cannot run, use a land alternative rather than chasing another island.
Overnight: Madalena, Pico.
Official island geographyDay 10: North coast or a displaced Pico outing
Use São Roque and the northern coast for a different part of Pico if previous days worked. Otherwise retain this for the land or marine activity lost to weather. A summit climb is a separate specialist decision and is not automatically a substitute for an unavailable boat trip.
Overnight: Madalena, Pico.
Official island geographyDay 11: Ferry from Madalena to Horta
Book a dated MAD–HOR journey and arrange the Pico car return before boarding. Travel as a foot passenger with Faial transport unless a vehicle crossing is separately authorised and reserved. Settle into Horta and keep the remaining time for town.
Overnight: Horta, Faial.
Official island geographyDay 12: Capelinhos and western Faial
Make Capelinhos the main excursion. Add its interpretation centre only under its current admission arrangements. Group western stops with your driver or rental-car day instead of treating the ferry arrival as the start of a rushed island circuit.
Overnight: Horta, Faial.
Official island geographyDay 13: Caldeira viewpoint, or Horta and Porto Pim
Use a suitable weather window for the Caldeira viewpoint; no crater descent or rim hike is assumed. If higher ground is obscured, use Horta and Porto Pim. This day also provides some recovery margin after a delayed crossing, but cannot insure the trip against prolonged disruption.
Overnight: Horta, Faial.
Official island geographyDay 14: Depart from Faial
Transfer to the booked Faial departure with the airline check-in margin. If homebound travel is only possible through a separate São Miguel ticket, change this route to sleep there before that flight. A positioning night has to replace a night here, not be squeezed in without changing the itinerary.
No overnight included.
Official island geographyIf your return flight leaves Ponta Delgada
Use five São Miguel nights at the start, four on Pico, three on Faial and one final São Miguel night. Fly back from Faial on day 13 on a confirmed itinerary and depart Ponta Delgada on day 14. The total remains 13 nights: the final positioning night replaces the initial flexible São Miguel night. It is not an extra free day.
That leaves less recovery time for an earlier missed São Miguel outing and only one planned night between flights. If you want more protection, take another night from sightseeing and return earlier. Separate tickets can have different disruption protection from one connected booking; a night buffer is not an insurance policy.
If São Jorge matters more than São Miguel
For a walking-led central-islands trip, replace the whole São Miguel block rather than adding a fourth island. A possible 13-night allocation is five nights on Pico, four on São Jorge and four on Faial. This gives walking days room to move and avoids the flight between the eastern and central island groups.
It still needs suitable arrival and departure flights plus confirmed ferry journeys in the required directions. Use the central-triangle planning guide and the shorter daily route for the geography, then spend the extra nights on weather margin and local outings. Do not infer a daily circular ferry from the triangle name.
Fourteen nights is a different holiday length
If you actually have 14 nights, this becomes a 15-calendar-day holiday when arrival and departure occupy different days. Add the extra night where the main weather-dependent activity needs a second opportunity, or use it to return to the departure island earlier. Do not turn it into a single night on Flores or Corvo: that would introduce a different transport problem.
For the 13-night version, price six São Miguel nights, four Pico nights and three Faial nights, the inter-island flight, the ferry, the actual arrival and homebound tickets, and local transport on all three islands. Add meals, admissions and optional marine trips. No room price or fare is assumed valid for every travel date.
Ferry booking and rental cars are separate decisions
The sea leg in the main route is Madalena (MAD) to Horta (HOR). Atlânticoline provides dated journey and availability searches; reserve the actual crossing before committing to the accommodation split. Passenger availability does not establish vehicle space.
Separate island rentals and a foot-passenger ticket are the uncomplicated comparison point. A Pico hire car may cross only under the supplier’s conditions and any required original-island return. A carrier accepting a vehicle booking does not grant the rental permission.
Atlânticoline: dated sailings and passenger/vehicle availabilityCurrent airline disruption notice
For travel during 21 October–3 November 2026, SATA has published a handling-strike notice affecting services at Azores airports during specified periods. It may affect both the inter-island flight and the arrival or departure journey in this plan. Read the notice’s dates, hours and rebooking conditions; it does not mean every flight is cancelled.
SATA: operational constraints and dated change conditionsWeather flexibility is part of the route
Swap the São Miguel lake days and retain Pico day 10 for an outing lost to conditions. A sea trip is not a guaranteed daily activity, and clear weather in town does not establish conditions on high ground. The plan names places and viewpoint outings rather than certifying trail access, bathing access or a Pico summit ascent.
Before adding a hike, use the individual official route description and alerts. Before adding a thermal visit or marine activity, obtain the actual admission or departure booking. Those decisions can change the day’s order without requiring another island move.
