How many days do you need on São Miguel?
Three full days on São Miguel cover a west-island day, Furnas and a central-island day without an inter-island move. Five full days let you add a real hike and an eastern outing. With seven, spread the east over more than one day and retain a weather-flexible day rather than adding another island by default.
These are editorial self-drive or private-driver plans, not operator itineraries or minimum stay requirements. A full day means you are already on the island and available to explore. Do not count a late arrival or an early departure as one of these days. Keep the order of the lake-viewpoint days movable according to visibility.
For the three- and five-day versions, Ponta Delgada is a practical single base. For seven days, an optional split is four nights in Ponta Delgada followed by two in Furnas, leaving on day seven. That six-night version assumes an early arrival on day one and a late departure on day seven; add nights if your flights do not provide those usable days.
Three full days: west, Furnas and the centre
Day 1 — Sete Cidades and the west. Drive or take an arranged visit to Vista do Rei, then descend to Sete Cidades village for the lakeshore and lunch. Add Mosteiros on the west coast if time permits, then return to Ponta Delgada. This version is a viewpoint-and-village day, not a full crater hike. If cloud hides the rim, exchange it with the central-island day rather than spending the morning waiting in a car park.
Day 2 — Furnas. Travel east to Furnas and give the village's geothermal area and Terra Nostra garden the main part of the day. If bathing is a priority, choose and book the thermal visit that fits your day. Do not automatically add Terra Nostra, Poça da Dona Beija and another distant bath simply because they appear on a checklist. Return to Ponta Delgada, or use this as your move to Furnas if you have chosen a split stay.
Day 3 — Ribeira Grande, Fogo viewpoints and a north-coast stop. Make Ribeira Grande the town stop and Lagoa do Fogo the weather-dependent high-ground visit. Add Caldeira Velha only with the correct bathing or visit-only ticket and enough time around its reserved slot. Return to your base without also attempting the separate southern PR02SMI lake walk.
This short plan leaves little scope for a weather recovery. If walking is the main reason for the trip, replace a sightseeing day with one complete hike rather than attaching a long walk to an already full day.
Visit Azores: São Miguel geographyFive full days: add a hike and the southeast
Keep the three days above, but add these two blocks wherever weather and your bookings fit. Stay in Ponta Delgada if avoiding hotel changes matters more than shortening eastern drives.
Day 4 — One proper walking day. Choose Serra Devassa for an upland lake circuit, using its current 9.1 km and 3h30 official listing. Alternatively walk the 7.5 km Vista do Rei route into Sete Cidades, with its finish transfer arranged in advance. Do not use the currently closed Mata do Canário PR04SMI as an extension. If you have already spent a full day around Sete Cidades and prefer different terrain, choose the north-coast Vigia de São Pedro route instead, allowing for its linear return.
Day 5 — Povoação and Faial da Terra. Head to the southeast for a town stop in Povoação and the Sanguinho/Salto do Prego loop from Faial da Terra. The official walk is 4.6 km, medium, with a two-hour average, so allow a substantial walking block plus the outward and return drives. The stone descent can be slippery. Do not extend onto the separately closed Ribeira do Faial da Terra PR11SMI.
For travellers who do not want two hiking days, replace Day 4 with time in Ponta Delgada and a short coastal outing. The point of the extra days is more time for your preferred activities, not a compulsory distance target.
Azores Trails: current closure listSeven days: split the east and keep a recovery day
Use the first four days of the five-day plan while based in Ponta Delgada. Then redistribute the remaining time as follows; this is an optional six-night arrangement, not the only sensible seven-day trip.
Day 5 — Move east to Furnas. Take a slower Furnas village or garden visit if Day 2 was shortened, and settle in rather than driving back west. If Furnas is already well covered, use the transfer day for a modest south-coast stop at Vila Franca do Campo. Do not make a boat trip to the islet essential to the day: access is seasonal and needs its own qualified booking. Overnight in Furnas.
Day 6 — Choose one eastern direction. For walking, use the Povoação and Faial da Terra day described above, then return to Furnas. For a non-hiking day, choose Nordeste and its coastal viewpoints instead. Do not try to combine a full waterfall hike with every northeastern viewpoint. Overnight in Furnas.
Day 7 — Weather recovery and departure. Use the day for a missed eastern stop if the departure time allows, then return towards Ponta Delgada airport with ample time for the drive, fuel, car return and check-in. If your flight leaves early, this is a departure day, not an available sightseeing day; move the weather buffer earlier or add a night.
You can also keep all nights in Ponta Delgada and make longer eastern day trips. That avoids packing and changing accommodation, while the Furnas split reduces repeated east-west travel. Neither arrangement requires an inter-island flight.
Visit Azores: São Miguel geographyWhat to reserve, and what to leave flexible
Fix accommodation, the rental car or driver, and any timed bathing tickets first. Caldeira Velha distinguishes bathing from visit-only admission; do not book a visit-only slot if your main purpose is to use the pools. Use the venue guide for its current purchase deadline and visit duration.
Keep unbooked viewpoint visits more flexible. The Fogo road has dated seasonal access restrictions and a shuttle scheme; the linked guide separates the current authority notice from older price and operating-date pages. A season's notice is not proof that the same dates will apply to every future year.
Arrange start-to-finish transport before a linear hike. A car parked at Vista do Rei does not follow you down to Sete Cidades, and a rental-car booking does not include that retrieval. If you prefer not to drive, reserve west, central and eastern day trips from one base and check that each includes the actual stops and walking time you want. This plan does not depend on unverified rural bus connections.
Budget for the trip you are actually taking
Price accommodation by your exact nights, the car or driver by the days you need, and thermal admissions per traveller. Add fuel, parking where charged, meals and any one-way walking transfer. This is a planning basket, not a bundled tour price. No hotel rate or guaranteed daily transport cost is implied.
You do not need to buy every thermal admission or a boat trip to make the itinerary work. On three days, one well-chosen bath leaves more room for the island than several timed entries. On a longer walking trip, spend on the transfers that make your chosen linear routes workable rather than adding activities you will have to rush.
