Azores attractions: things to do by island and season
Choose crater lakes, thermal baths, whale watching, fajã walks or diving, then group the right places into days without unnecessary island transfers.
Start with the activity that decides the island
For a first trip combining several Azores attractions, São Miguel is the simplest starting choice: crater lakes, Furnas thermal baths, town time and whale-watching departures fit on one island. Choose Pico for vineyards, lava coast and a sea-led stay; Faial for Horta, Capelinhos and the Caldeira; São Jorge for fajã walking; or Terceira for Angra do Heroísmo and coastal outings. You do not need to collect those experiences in one week. Choose the one or two that matter most, then select a base and transport. A boat excursion and an exposed hike both need spare-day flexibility, so booking them back-to-back around fixed flights can leave little room for a weather change.

| Compare | Where to start | What changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Crater lakes | Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, São Miguel | A viewpoint visit is different from a full hike; cloud and road access matter |
| Thermal garden and baths | Terra Nostra or Poça da Dona Beija, Furnas | Garden-and-bath versus a focused bathing session; choose one first |
| Whale watching | Ponta Delgada or Vila Franca on São Miguel; Lajes on Pico | Departure harbour, boat facilities, season and cancellation terms |
| Fajã walking | São Jorge: Serra do Topo through Santo Cristo to Cubres | A one-way descent with separate finish transport |
| Volcanic landscapes | Faial: Caldeira and Capelinhos | Vegetated high rim versus western ash landscape; give them different outings |
| Diving | Santa Maria, Pico or Faial according to site | Coastal sessions and advanced offshore expeditions require different experience |
| Historic town time | Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira | A useful town-led day; cave admission is a separate, date-sensitive question |
São Miguel: choose a west day and a Furnas day
Use Sete Cidades as a western outing. A viewpoint stop followed by the village leaves a different amount of time from the full Vista do Rei walk, which needs a return transfer. Do not promise the full hike, a long lunch and every western coastal stop in the same afternoon. Give Furnas a separate day for the lake, village and one chosen thermal visit. Terra Nostra admission includes its garden, thermal pool and jacuzzis; its published public hours are 10:30–16:30. This is a daytime garden visit, not a late-evening bath. Poça da Dona Beija is the alternative to compare for a focused evening session. Lagoa do Fogo fits a different central/north-coast day. The road viewpoints, the southern walking route and a Caldeira Velha bathing ticket are distinct arrangements. Use the dedicated guide rather than assuming one transport ticket covers all three.
Terra Nostra: ticket inclusions and public hoursWhale watching: spring migration or a summer sea day
The IWC identifies April to June as the migration period for blue, fin and sei whales in the Azores. Sperm whales are resident year-round, with higher abundance and sighting chances reported in summer. That does not establish a running winter tour or guarantee any species on your trip. Choose the actual harbour and boat before choosing an operator solely by a sightings claim. Ponta Delgada can be straightforward from a city stay; a Lajes do Pico departure still needs a road journey if you sleep in Madalena. Put the attempt early in the stay and keep another possible date. A land-based town afternoon is an easier companion than a prepaid connection immediately after the boat.

On Pico, reserve a coast-and-vineyard day instead of making the mountain ascent the condition for a successful holiday. The stone-walled vineyard landscape and lava coast give the island a purpose without a summit. Mountain access and weather need a separate plan; a general sightseeing circuit is not a climbing itinerary. On Faial, Horta’s waterfront pairs with Porto Pim for a town half-day. Give Capelinhos and the western volcanic coast their own outing, and use good visibility for the Caldeira viewpoint or rim walk. The rim is not permission to descend to the crater floor. Choose São Jorge when the fajã walking itself earns the move. Serra do Topo–Santo Cristo–Cubres is a linear route with a substantial descent and a different finish point. It is not a quick lagoon stop to insert between outward and return ferries. Pick two triangle islands before assuming all three improve a short holiday.
Visit Azores: Pico vineyard and lava landscapesTerceira: Angra is the anchor, not a guaranteed cave visit
Angra do Heroísmo gives Terceira a town-led day of central streets, waterfront and an optional Monte Brasil extension. The headland adds climbing and is not a step-free continuation for every visitor. Biscoitos and the north coast are a different outing; natural pools remain dependent on sea conditions. Algar do Carvão needs a dated decision. Montanheiros says visits stop from 1 November 2026 for visitor-centre construction. It expects reopening in March 2027 but marks March as uncertain. For late October 2026, it lists Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday afternoons. Do not buy a winter island tour on the assumption that cave entry is included. The temporary arrangements include many steps, slippery surfaces and no toilets or shelter on site. The operator discourages visits for people with physical or balance limitations and babies or children carried in arms. Another cave’s name on an itinerary does not establish equivalent access or opening.
Montanheiros: Algar do Carvão closure and visiting conditionsDiving: an introductory session is not an offshore expedition
Santa Maria is the closer departure island for Formigas and Dollabarat. Pico and Faial are bases for Princess Alice. Those remote sites require suitable conditions and appropriate experience; a shallow reef somewhere within a site does not make the whole excursion beginner-friendly. For example, CW Azores requires its Princess Alice divers to complete a check dive, hold Advanced Open Water or equivalent, have 50 logged dives and be at least 18. Its advertised July-to-September season is narrower than the general summer diving window. Choose a suitable instructor-led coastal introduction for a first dive instead of making an advanced offshore trip the group’s shared activity.
CW Azores: Princess Alice requirements and seasonBuild a week that leaves room for the weather
For a first São Miguel week, our suggested pattern is an arrival afternoon in Ponta Delgada, a western Sete Cidades day, a whale-watching attempt with a local afternoon, a Furnas day, a Fogo/north-coast day, and one flexible full day before departure. Use that flexible day for a postponed boat, a suitable walk or a slower eastern outing rather than prepaying a different remote activity every day. This is editorial pacing, not a tour package or a guarantee that each outing runs. Paid baths need their own tickets; boat and diving quotes need their own weather terms; linear walks need their return journeys. Compare those complete costs, not a single headline activity fare. If your main priorities are all on São Miguel, another island is optional.
