Azores ferries: routes, ports, seasons and booking choices

Understand where ferries fit an Azores trip, decode Horta, Madalena and other port names, and separate passenger bookings, vehicle space and seasonal route evidence.

Use ferries for a confirmed corridor, not an all-nine-island circuit

Azores ferries are most useful when your itinerary fits an actual sailing between named ports. Start with Horta–Madalena for Faial and Pico, compare the available Pico–São Jorge journeys for a triangle stay, and treat Flores–Corvo as a separate western crossing. Do not assume one continuous ferry network connects all nine islands on your dates.

Atlânticoline’s current timetable search offers the islands Corvo, Faial, Flores, Graciosa, Pico, São Jorge and Terceira. São Miguel and Santa Maria are not in that origin selector. If your plan starts on São Miguel, compare flights rather than building a holiday around a presumed ferry to Pico, Terceira or Santa Maria. A historical map or island-group name is not an operating timetable.

Read the port names before choosing the room

On Faial, HOR means Horta. On Pico, MAD is Madalena and CDP is Cais do Pico: they are different ports. São Jorge has VEL for Velas and CAL for Calheta. Terceira’s key distinguishes PRV, Praia da Vitória, from ADH, Angra do Heroísmo.

The same key lists PRG for Vila da Praia on Graciosa, SCF for Santa Cruz on Flores and VNC for Vila Nova on Corvo. These are ferry search codes, not airport codes: a Horta airport booking and a ferry result may both use HOR in different contexts. A named port in the key does not prove that a particular island pair runs that day.

Faial–Pico: Horta and Madalena are the first comparison

For a Faial-and-Pico trip, start with the Horta–Madalena corridor and search both directions. The timetable reviewed on 25 October 2026 showed HORMAD entries with a scheduled half-hour passage. That is a dated example, not a promise of a departure at your preferred time or guaranteed sailing conditions.

A Horta stay and a central Madalena stay can reduce the road travel around this crossing. If the purpose is Lajes whale watching, a mountain booking or another non-port attraction, include the Pico road journey. A day-return ticket buys a crossing, not a complete island visit. Stay overnight when repeated long outings would otherwise require repeated boat commutes.

São Jorge and the rest of the central group

For São Jorge, inspect whether the offered trip calls at Madalena or Cais do Pico and whether it arrives at Velas or another listed port. A through result with an intermediate call is different from two separately booked sailings; read the actual journey before arranging your pickup. Match the booked arrival to your accommodation, especially if staying near Calheta rather than Velas.

For Graciosa or Terceira, test the intended day and reverse direction individually. Their presence in the search does not establish a daily year-round link or a workable return. Keep the central triangle’s relatively compact geography separate from a proposed five-island tour.

Flores–Corvo is a different planning problem

Treat the Flores–Corvo sailing or excursion as its own outward-and-return plan. Arrival is at Corvo’s village, with a separate road journey toward Caldeirão. A small-boat excursion can include a different coastal programme from a scheduled passenger ferry, so compare what the booked product actually covers.

Keep a Flores day that is worthwhile if the Corvo crossing cannot operate. If Corvo itself is the main purpose, compare an overnight with a day excursion and allow recovery time around onward travel. Neither option guarantees sea conditions or access to the crater walk.

How to search seasons and buy the ticket

Use Atlânticoline’s timetable with origin, destination and the actual date. Search the return separately and note every port and intermediate call. The current interface shows named lines, but a line colour alone is not a season guarantee. Use the journey returned for the selected date and then proceed to booking.

The timetable explains that passenger availability means remaining seats, while vehicle availability is a percentage based on occupied car-deck space. Neither is a completed reservation. The operator directs you to booking to confirm availability and purchase. If the date you need is not offered, do not interpret that as a usable sailing or invent a departure from last year’s schedule.

Taking a car: two permissions to resolve

A passenger booking and a vehicle booking are different. Select the correct vehicle category, verify deck space and read the vehicle-transport conditions. If it is a rental, obtain the hire company’s required consent and confirm where the car must be returned. The ferry selling vehicle space does not override the rental agreement.

For a short multi-island trip, compare travelling as a passenger with separate local rentals or booked transfers. Include the time and cost of vehicle collection and return on each island. Do not assume that a car on Pico removes the need for a trail pickup after a one-way São Jorge walk.

Day trips, delays and the final flight

For a day trip, calculate useful time ashore after check-in requirements and road transfers, using the actual return booking. A return that looks late enough on paper can still be too early for a long inland outing. Keep boarding points and operator contact details with the tickets rather than relying on a screenshot of a route map.

For the final flight home, our preference is to be back on its departure island with a separate recovery day where practicable. This is editorial risk planning, not a guarantee that disruption will resolve within a day. Read the transport contract’s change and cancellation terms and your insurance before committing to inflexible onward arrangements. No live fare, seat inventory or operator partnership is claimed here.
